Singapore/Assam, September 19, 2025 — India and Assam are in shock tonight. Popular singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg has died at the age of 52 after a tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore, according to NDTV.
The Incident
Zubeen Garg was in Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival. During a scuba diving outing, he suddenly developed breathing problems underwater.
He was pulled out of the water, given CPR, and rushed to Singapore General Hospital. Doctors tried to revive him in the ICU, but he was declared dead in the afternoon, reports Times of India.
Assam in Mourning
The news spread like wildfire across Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma called him “one of Assam’s favourite sons” and said the state had lost a legend, as reported by Hindustan Times.
Organisers of the festival immediately cancelled all remaining events. Arrangements are being made to bring his body back to Assam after official procedures in Singapore.
His Last Words to Fans
Hours before the tragedy, Zubeen had posted an update inviting fans to his performance: “I’ll be there with you…” The message has since gone viral, leaving millions heartbroken.
A Legendary Career
Zubeen Garg, born Zubeen Borthakur, rose to fame with his Bollywood hit “Ya Ali” from Gangster. But to Assam, he was far more than a playback singer — he was a cultural ambassador, blending folk traditions with modern sounds.
He recorded songs in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and many other languages, leaving behind a treasure of music.

He is survived by his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, an acclaimed costume designer, and their son, Gautam Garg.
