10 Horror Movies Like Sinners That Fans Shouldn’t Miss
Coogler’s vampire film ended, and plenty of people sat there staring at the credits, wondering what on earth to put on next. Fair. Fresh horror movies that actually surprise you don’t turn up often, so this list sticks to ten that earn the time. Seven are films. Three are series that dropped this October. Some are new, some are old, and each one ties back to something that came before it. There’s one paragraph per pick and nothing fancy, so jump around and grab whatever suits tonight.

1. Sinners
Twin brothers, both played by Michael B. Jordan, come home to 1932 Mississippi and open a juke joint. Then the vampires walk in. Ryan Coogler made this in 2025, and the blues sits at the centre of everything. The music scenes hit hardest, especially newcomer Miles Caton singing like his life depends on it. Hailee Steinfeld is in there too. Drama, musical, monster film, all stuffed together, and nothing feels crowded. It’s loud, sweaty and beautiful to watch, and it became one of the biggest original hits in years, which almost never happens now. Start here if a friend still hasn’t seen it.
2. Weapons
2:17 in the morning. Seventeen kids from one class climb out of bed, walk outside and run into the dark with their arms stretched out behind them. Nobody knows why. Weapons takes its sweet time explaining, and the story keeps changing who it follows, from a teacher played by Julia Garner to a furious dad played by Josh Brolin, who ends up leading the witch hunt. Every switch flips what you thought was going on. The town goes from scared to angry fast. Parts are weirdly funny, which sounds wrong and works. Zach Cregger directed. Watch it with as little info as possible.
3. Barbarian
Here’s a small problem. A woman arrives at her rental house in Detroit and a stranger is already inside. That’s how Cregger’s 2022 debut starts, and for the first twenty minutes it plays like a regular thriller, thanks to Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgård being so natural together. Then somebody opens the basement door. Justin Long turns up later and brings some very dark laughs. Small budget, one house, nowhere to hide. Barbarian works best cold, so skip the trailer and dodge the spoilers. It’s a good warm up for his later film too.
4. Get Out
Jordan Peele’s 2017 debut made a lot of people take scary stories seriously again. Chris, played by Daniel Kaluuya, goes to meet his girlfriend’s parents for the weekend. Everyone is nice. A bit too nice. The tension creeps up slowly, then snaps. Peele took home an Oscar for the script, and Get Out still gets quoted all the time. It was shot in about three weeks, which is wild for how polished it looks. It says something sharp about race without lecturing anyone. Perfect for people who like a point behind the fear.
5. Hereditary
This is the heavy one. Ari Aster’s 2018 film for A24 starts when a grandmother dies, and the family slowly comes apart in ways that get worse and worse. Toni Collette carries nearly every scene, and that’s the main reason people still talk about it. Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro play her kids, and both are great. It cost about ten million dollars and earned a huge profit, so plenty of folks wanted to be this scared. Hereditary is slow, sad and tough to shake off. Keep the lights on. Or skip it if the week has already been rough.
6. The Conjuring
James Wan brought the haunted house back in 2013. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga play Ed and Lorraine Warren, who were real paranormal investigators. The tricks are simple and they work. A creaky house, a clap in the dark, hide and seek gone very wrong. The Conjuring grew into a giant franchise, and the fourth main film, Last Rites, came out in September 2025 as the Warrens’ final case. It pulled in close to $500 million worldwide. A new prequel is set for 2027, so don’t hold your breath for a real goodbye.
7. A Quiet Place
Make a noise and something eats you. That’s all there is to the entire premise. John Krasinski took us on a walk on the 2018 box office hit and followed that with his wife Emily Blunt, as parents desperate to keep their children alive while in a world where silence is the only solution. It’s largely not much of a dialogue heavy movie, which makes it all the more suspenseful with each step on the floor catching the attention of the monsters. It’s one of those movies where every little noise feels massive and it even had a good run with a sequel and then Day One in 2024 with Lupita Nyong’o.
8. Friday the 13th
The 1980 original is a summer camp, a lake and a killer. Quick fact for newcomers, that killer isn’t Jason. It’s his mom, Pamela. This October Peacock dropped Crystal Lake, a prequel series set in 1971, created by Brad Caleb Kane, with Linda Cardellini as Pamela. All eight episodes dropped on October 15 (prequel series, 2026). Friday the 13th has always meant slasher, but this one leans more on her story than on blood. Different moods. Decent way in for anybody who skipped the old ones.
9. Carrie
Stephen King’s first novel came out in 1974, and people keep retelling it. Brian De Palma made the famous 1976 film, and a remake followed in 2013. Now Mike Flanagan has turned it into an eight-episode series on Prime Video, out since October 7, 2026, with Summer H. Howell as the lead and Matthew Lillard in the cast. Even Kyra Sedgwick directed an episode. Carrie is a shy, homeschooled teen with telekinetic powers, bullied until something snaps. Flanagan moves the bullying into the social media age. A second season is already ordered.
10. Below
Netflix put all six episodes of Below online on October 8. Josh Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, a fisherman in a small Newfoundland town called Snook’s Arm, where residents are being offered a buyout to leave. Then something enormous turns up in the water. Mackenzie Davis plays a marine researcher who helps him dig in, and Charlie Heaton plays his son. Creature story, family drama, a few scares. Heads up, a 2002 submarine ghost film shares the title, so check the year before searching.
That’s All Ten
Some are loud, some are slow, and one or two might cost a night of sleep. Save the slasher prequel for a group watch and the grief film for a quiet night alone. More horror movies are always on the way, so this list will need a refresh next year.
